Cultural Cricket Leagues (Youth, Women, Men)

Cultural Cricket Leagues (Youth, Women, Men)

Cultural Cricket Leagues (Youth, Women, Men)

 

Purpose: Use cricket/kirikiti to build health, leadership, and cultural pride.

What we do: Seasonal leagues and clinics with coaching, officiating, and family-centered match days that include Samoan protocol, music, and language moments.

Who it’s for: Ages 8+; beginners welcome. 

Schedule: Year-round cycles (8–10 weeks/season) at local parks (e.g., Victoria Park, Carson).

Outcomes we track:

  • 60+ participants/year with ≥75% retention across seasons
  • Increase weekly physical activity (self-reported)
  • ≥90% report programs feel welcoming & culturally affirming
    Equity & access: Sliding-scale fees, loaner equipment, transportation support (as funds allow).
    Safety: Concussion protocols, first-aid/CPR-certified staff, accident medical coverage, background checks for coaches, and City-approved liability insurance with athletic participant coverage.

Women & Girls Leadership Pathway

Purpose: Create visible leadership roles for women and girls in sport and community.

What we do: Coaching apprenticeships, umpire/captain certification, public-speaking and facilitation workshops, and near-peer mentorship.

Who it’s for: Middle school–adult women/girls; inclusive of all experience levels.

Outcomes we track:

  • 12+ coaches/mentors trained per year (≥50% women/young women)
  • 6+ officials/captains certified per year
  • Leadership placements (coaching, captaining, clinic leads) in each season
    Cultural grounding: Leadership framed through fa‘aaloalo (respect) and tautua (service) to community.

Youth Development & Mentorship (Aiga Model)

Purpose: Build life skills, academic confidence, and cultural identity through sport.

What we do: After-school skills labs, homework support, goal-setting, and elder-led culture circles (language, songs, stories).

Who it’s for: Ages 11–18; priority to first-time athletes and low-income families.

Outcomes we track:

  • Attendance & persistence (≥80% session attendance)
  • Self-reported increases in belonging, confidence, and teamwork
  • Referrals to tutoring/college prep partner programs
    Partners: Schools, faith and cultural orgs; youth referrals welcome.

Cultural Education & Events

Community Service (Tautua) & Park Stewardship

Purpose: Celebrate Samoan and Pacific Islander heritage in public spaces.

What we do: Cultural-cricket days, workshops (dance, language, etiquette), and community festivals integrated with matches.

Who it’s for: Open to the public; families encouraged.

Outcomes we will track:

  • events/clinics annually
  • Family participation (headcount + volunteer hours)
  • Surveyed cultural pride/learning (brief post-event forms)
    Accessibility: Free/low-cost entry; multilingual signage as available.

Health Safety & Wellness in Sport

Community Service (Tautua) & Park Stewardship

Purpose: Make play safer and more sustainable for families.

What we do: Warm-up & injury-prevention routines, hydration stations, nutrition tips, mental-health resource referrals, and sun-safety education.

Outcomes we will track:

  • Injury reports and response times
  • Pre/Post knowledge checks on safety topics
  • Participant referrals to local clinics/partners (as needed)
    Compliance: Trained safety leads, incident logs, and annual policy review.

Community Service (Tautua) & Park Stewardship

Community Service (Tautua) & Park Stewardship

 

Purpose: Practice tautua (service) by caring for our fields and neighbors.

What we do: Park clean-ups, equipment drives, “buddy” days for new players, and volunteer support for city/community events.

Outcomes we will track:

  • volunteer hours per year
  • Park activation metrics (field-use hours, joint events with Parks & Rec)
  • Neighborhood feedback via quick surveys and partner email
